... a modern nursery rhyme. A victim of abuse sings to her small daughter “a song about modern times” in Does It Ever Leave Your Mind – warning her child about the evil behind the benign face: “How was I to recognise through smiling eyes the evil in his mind?” So, the mother sings to make her child aware that: “Some live in a private hell, it’s hard to tell and know their thoughts inside…”. The walking bass is relaxed but sounds a warning. This is the only song on the album which features kick and snare and the drums, a bit “machiney”, tell you that something is afoot. The instrumental section forsakes a repeat of verse but cleverly manipulates and morphs the chorus into an appealing and brooding new melody.
